Diabetes
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the body is unable to convert glucose into energy, and the level of glucose in the blood rises. Glucose in the blood stream comes from carbohydrate foods, which are converted into glucose.
The liver also converts fat and protein into glucose to ensure that there is a constant glucose supply in the body.
Glucose is converted to energy by the use of insulin - a hormone produced by the pancreas.
Insulin has two jobs in the body:
-The first is to transport glucose from the blood supply into fat and muscle cells where it can be used for energy
-The second is to switch off the liver once the level of glucose in the blood is high enough.
Diabetes presents a serious health challenge for New Zealand. It is a significant cause of ill health and premature death. The impact of diabetes is substantially preventable
